Death of a Reader
I dropped my Sony PRS-505 digital reader yesterday from a height of about 3 feet onto an area rug over a hardwood floor. The result….a broken substrate under the LCD (technically it’s not an LCD) that renders the unit rather worthless. There are no visible signs of damage, but I’ve been assured that’s what has happened. Researching the warranty and its exclusions, it looks...

Tom: Quite possibly. Do you feel it in your...ahem?
Scott: Only when holding it.

PAC is Fully Accredited
Beth has yet to make an official public announcement, though she cleared us to tell friends and family…Portland Actors Conservatory is now fully accredited through the  National Association of Schools of Theatre. This is the first non-university organization in the Pacific Northwest to be granted this status (no Washington organizations have achieved it). The Class of 2008 (which includes...

Ruminations on the Apricot
I tried my first apricot the other day. I’d had dried apricots before as well as apricot preserves, but never a fresh apricot. After my second apricot, a friend warned me about the digestive impact of apricot overconsumption. Thanks for the advice, but I’m not eating 20 in one sitting. Apricots have, on average, only 17 calories. I didn’t believe this at first, and consulted several references. It...

At the risk of losing all my friends...
…I have to say I like the new Neil Diamond album. Apparently, other folks like it as well, as it debuted in the UK at #1 and is also #1 on Billboard. For those that may not have the stamina to listen to the whole thing, the two best tracks are If I Don’t See You Again and Another Day That Time Forgot, the latter being a duet with Natalie Maines. And just as a general aside, I think...

Carry an Extra Towel?
Everybody in Portland will be talking about how hot it is today. The magic number missing from this little forecast window is the humidity, which will be around 26%. I love Portland and Portlanders, but they…um…we…still have it pretty easy when it comes to weather. Oh…and carry an extra towel? I didn’t realize I was supposed to be carrying one to begin with, let...

Back to the Original Theme
Well I’m back with the original theme. I also never noticed the tumblr widgets for random posts and formatting the site for mobile browsers. I’ve added those to the side bar. I’ve also kept the Search box, but I need to work on how the results are formatted…it’s not what I’d call a “sexy search feature.” I also made one CSS change, but I bet $5...

Theme Test Drive Update
Initial polls suggest the new theme kinda…sucks. So I’m back to the old theme. For those who didn’t get a chance to look, here’s a screenshot of the shortly test driven theme. I do need to implement search and make some CSS changes to the old, that is, readopted theme.

Test Driving a New Theme
I’m trying a new theme. Here’s a large image of the old one for those that want to compare. I don’t like the way the date, quotes and conversations are formatted, and the amount of white space after photos needs to be adjusted a bit too. I’m going to give this theme a shot for a few days. I’m not sure if I’ll spend much time tweaking it or if I’ll just go...

Diet Coke Abstinence: Day 31
When I started this whole attempt to kick Diet Coke from my life, I had ten 20oz bottles of Diet Coke in my fridge. Thirty-one days later I have six remaining. Of the four that were “consumed,” three were poured down the drain after tasting them and finding them kinda nasty. Only one was consumed entirely. As for other soft drinks, there have been a total of four Diet 7-Ups. For the...

So does the steampunk fashion/lifestyle become less cool if it hits the New York Times? Wait…maybe this means I can dress as if I’m in the Highland Light Infantry everyday.

Why I Hate the Kentucky Derby
Tomorrow is the Kentucky Derby. As a recovering Kentuckian, here are some random thoughts I have about the Kentucky Derby…that is, why I hate the Kentucky Derby: Mint Juleps – such a sad waste of bourbon. Dan Fogelberg’s awful song - may he rest in peace. Poor sections of town that are nearly shut down so the fancy pants out-of-towners won’t be too inconvenienced. That’s right, I...
